Alphonse Karr

  Genus/Species Bambusa multiplex
Common Name Alphonse Karr
Typical Dimensions 4-5m high, culm diameters to 25mm. -12°c
Description One of the hardiest and most attractive screening plants, Alphonse Karr is gold with green stripes and a compact bushy form.   Unfortunately, it is prone to mealy bug infestation in humid conditions so we don’t generally recommend it for Queensland applications but it is a beautiful south of the border.     It is not as upright as some other species, so contact us for more advice on whether this is the most suitable bamboo for your requirements.

The Alphonse Karr will grow well in sandy soil. It is quite a hardy, vigorous plant that grows well in all soil types. We don’t however recommend it for Queensland buyers as it tends to be prone to mealy bug infection in our warmer climate.

Alphonse Karr is suitable for screening in Sydney however it usually gets to around 3-4m tall so may be a bit larger than what you would like. Also it does tend to get quite wide across at the foliage so will lean into your garden space somewhat also. As an alternative I could recommend Variegated Malay Dwarf (2-3m tall) or Chinese Dwarf (3m-4m tall) but both very compact, bushy & upright form. We usually suggest planting at 1m spacings to achieve a good dense privacy screen.

Yes, Alphonse Karr is suitable for growing in Canberra. It is frost tolerant to minus 12 degrees and one of the most popular hedging varieties.

I was just wondering how long it takes for the Alphonse Karr to reach its 4m aprox height? we are looking for a tall, quick screen. Thank you

How much water & fertiliser the plants receive and the soil type & climate in which the plant is grown will all affect the growth rate of bamboo. However as a general rule you could expect Alphonse Karr to reach approx 4m tall within 2-3 years if planted a 200mm sized pot. Our most popular species for screening is Gracilis which grows to approx 6-8m tall and forms a lovely dense, upright screen.
