Yes bamboo can be planted in clay soil. Clumping bamboo are very hardy and we have bamboo on our property growing in both clay soil areas & sandy soil areas. I can recommend suitable species for you if you could get back to me with details of what you are trying to achieve, eg height, screening, ornamental, windbreak, edible shoots or timber varieties??

Thank you for your enquiry. Our best seller for privacy screening for two storey screening (i.e 6 to 8 m tall) is Bambusa textilis ‘Gracilis’. It is very compact & upright and forms a nice dense privacy hedge. For a single storey screen (to 3m tall) our most popular species are Variegated Malay Dwarf or Chinese Dwarf. We usually suggest planting at 1m to 1.5m spacings to achieve a good screen.
